Same Gift Box, Offset vs Digital + Hot Stamping + UV 3 Quote Comparison: How Customers Below 500 Pieces Do the Math

500 gift box 3 plans (offset / digital + hot stamping / digital + UV) real cost comparison + offset MOQ 1000-3000 pieces fixed cost structure + digital hot stamping vs traditional hot stamping yield difference (88% vs 96%) + UV curing time not sufficient 3 consequences (sticky / poor wear resistance / UV shedding) + optimal plan under different order quantities (100-300 pieces choose digital + hot stamping / 1000-3000 pieces choose offset + traditional hot stamping) + 3 core questions for customers to choose a plan (order quantity / brand tonality / budget cap).
In November 2025, a new consumer brand customer in Shenzhen wanted to make 500 Mid-Autumn gift boxes. They got quotes from 3 printers: offset printer quoted 18 RMB/box (2000 piece MOQ), digital + hot stamping printer quoted 22 RMB/box, digital + UV printer quoted 25 RMB/box. The customer chose the cheapest offset 18 RMB/box, printed 2000, but actually only needed 500, the remaining 1500 gift boxes the customer couldn't digest themselves, and the printer wouldn't take returns, the customer paid 50,000 RMB extra.
The customer came to me, and his first question was: 'Offset 18 RMB/box is the cheapest, why did choosing it actually lose money?'
I replied: 'Offset 18 RMB/box is the price for 2000 pieces MOQ. A 500 piece order at offset unit price would be 35-40 RMB/box, because the fixed cost of offset (machine startup, debugging, test print loss) cannot be spread over 500 pieces, so the unit cost is actually 2x higher. The 3 printer quotes need to be compared under 'the same MOQ' to be meaningful.'
The same gift box (taking the 350×250×80mm Tian-Di-Gai gift box as an example), the 3 plans have completely different real cost structures. Customers need to calculate the total, not just look at the unit price.
1. Offset 2000 piece MOQ — 3 categories of pitfalls customers easily fall into
Offset is the most mature printing process, with the lowest unit price, but the MOQ requirement is high (usually 1000-3000 pieces). Customers choosing the offset plan easily fall into 3 pitfalls.
Pitfall 1: MOQ threshold. The fixed cost of starting an offset press once (machine setup, test printing, loss) is about 2,000-5,000 RMB, and orders below 1000 pieces spread this fixed cost to a unit cost that is 2-3 times higher. So offset printers usually require 1000-3000 pieces MOQ, and orders below 500 pieces are basically not accepted. If the customer insists on 500 pieces offset, the printer may 'quote a low price to attract the customer, but actually print 2000 and require the customer to take all', and the customer accepts passively.
Pitfall 2: 'Print 2000 but only need 500' inventory pressure. Even if the printer is willing to print 500 pieces at MOQ, the unit price will be very high (35-45 RMB/box); if the customer accepts 2000 pieces MOQ, the unit price is low (18-22 RMB/box), but the customer has to bear the inventory and capital occupation of 1500 pieces. Calculating at unit price × quantity + inventory cost, the total cost of 2000 piece MOQ may be higher than 500 pieces digital printing.
Pitfall 3: 'Small printer trap' for small-batch offset. Some small printers use 'second-hand offset machines' to take 500 piece small orders, priced cheaply (15-18 RMB/box), but second-hand offset machines have worse color difference stability and overprint accuracy than new machines, and customers easily have problems during acceptance. It is recommended that customers prioritize printers with 'Heidelberg', 'KBA', 'Komori' brand offset machines, and be wary of second-hand offset machine quotes.
2. Digital + Hot Stamping — 3 categories of hot stamping cost traps
Digital + hot stamping is a common plan for high-end gift boxes under 500 pieces, and customers need to understand 3 categories of hot stamping cost traps before placing an order.
Trap 1: Yield difference between digital hot stamping vs traditional hot stamping. Traditional hot stamping (copper plate / zinc plate + hot stamping machine) has a high yield rate (95-98%), because the equipment and process are mature; digital hot stamping (HP Indigo digital hot stamping or laser hot stamping) has a lower yield (85-92%), mainly because the 'hot stamping film adhesion' of digital hot stamping is affected by the ink layer surface, and is prone to local shedding. 500 gift boxes with 88% digital hot stamping yield means 60 gift boxes are reworked, rework cost 3-5 RMB/box, total loss 200-300 RMB.
Trap 2: Hot stamping area vs unit price. Hot stamping is charged by 'hot stamping area', not by number of gift boxes. Digital hot stamping 0.5-1.5 RMB/cm², traditional hot stamping 0.05-0.2 RMB/cm², a 10-30x difference. A 350×250mm gift box with 50cm² hot stamping area, digital hot stamping 25-75 RMB/box, traditional hot stamping 2.5-10 RMB/box. If the customer only looks at the total 'hot stamping + printing' price without looking at the hot stamping area breakdown, they can be easily misled by the quote.
Trap 3: Hot stamping plate cost allocation. Traditional hot stamping requires copper plate / zinc plate, plate cost 300-800 RMB/plate, 500 pieces order plate cost allocation 0.6-1.6 RMB/box; digital hot stamping does not need plate cost, but the unit price is high. 500 piece order, plate cost allocation has little impact on total cost, but if the customer needs to add an order later, the 'no plate cost' advantage of digital hot stamping disappears (because there is no master plate, the additional order still needs to re-hot stamp).
3. Digital + UV — 3 categories of UV curing problems
Digital + UV (partial UV coating) is another common plan for high-end gift boxes under 500 pieces, and customers need to understand 3 categories of UV curing problems before placing an order.
Problem 1: Insufficient UV curing time. Digital printing + UV partial coating, UV lamp exposure time is usually 2-5 seconds (traditional offset UV 5-10 seconds). If UV curing is not sufficient, the UV layer surface becomes sticky, wear resistance is poor, and the UV layer may fall off or fog after 1-2 weeks. Customers may not see it during acceptance, but after 1 month on the shelf, the problem occurs, and the printer and brand argue.
Problem 2: Color difference in UV areas. The UV coated area and the uncoated area will have a 5-10% gloss difference, and the color looks inconsistent. If the brand has high requirements for color consistency (such as cosmetics, electronics), the UV coated area needs to be individually color-adjusted, the process is more complex, and the cost increases by 30-50%.
Problem 3: Environmental friendliness of UV adhesive. Traditional UV adhesive contains photoinitiators and reactive diluents, with slight odor and VOC emissions. Cosmetics, food gift boxes are sensitive to odor, and UV adhesive odor may affect the product (especially odor-sensitive products like chocolate, tea). It is recommended that food gift boxes prioritize 'odorless UV adhesive' or 'water-based UV adhesive', priced 1.5-2 times higher, but with better environmental friendliness.
4. Real cost comparison of the 3 plans — example for 500 pieces 350×250×80mm Tian-Di-Gai gift box
To let customers intuitively see the cost difference, I use real data to make a comparison table (based on the East China printer average price in November 2025).
Assumed conditions: 500 gift boxes, size 350×250×80mm, structure Tian-Di-Gai, printing 4-color CMYK, surface process hot stamping (brand LOGO 50cm²) or UV (brand LOGO 50cm²), material 300g white cardboard + 120g gray board, inner tray EVA.
Plan A: Offset + Traditional Hot Stamping (2000 piece MOQ). Unit price 18 RMB/box (500 piece MOQ actual unit price 35 RMB/box, customer prints 2000 to get the low price), actual unit price allocated to 500 pieces = 18 × 2000 / 500 = 72 RMB/box. But the customer actually only needs 500 pieces, after printing 2000 pieces the remaining inventory 1500 pieces discounted at 50%, actual unit cost = 18 × 2000 / 2000 = 18 RMB/box + inventory discount loss = actual comprehensive cost 30-35 RMB/box.
Plan B: Digital + Digital Hot Stamping (500 piece MOQ). Unit price 22 RMB/box, no MOQ requirement, 500 pieces fully accepted, actual comprehensive cost 22 RMB/box + digital hot stamping yield loss 88% × 60 reworked × 4 RMB/box = 240 RMB / 500 pieces = 0.5 RMB/box = comprehensive cost 22.5 RMB/box.
Plan C: Digital + UV (500 piece MOQ). Unit price 25 RMB/box, no MOQ requirement, 500 pieces fully accepted, actual comprehensive cost 25 RMB/box + UV yield loss 92% × 40 reworked × 4 RMB/box = 160 RMB / 500 pieces = 0.3 RMB/box = comprehensive cost 25.3 RMB/box.
Real conclusion: 500 piece order, Plan B (digital + digital hot stamping) has the lowest comprehensive cost 22.5 RMB/box, Plan A (offset + traditional hot stamping) has the highest comprehensive cost 30-35 RMB/box (because of inventory loss), Plan C (digital + UV) has the medium comprehensive cost 25.3 RMB/box.
5. Optimal plan under different order quantities
Different order quantities have different optimal plans, customers should choose according to order quantity.
100-300 pieces order: Digital + Digital Hot Stamping is optimal. Offset MOQ is too high, digital UV cost is higher than hot stamping. 100 gift box unit price 30-40 RMB/box is a reasonable range.
300-1000 pieces order: Digital + Digital Hot Stamping or Digital + UV. Both plans have similar comprehensive cost, customer chooses by brand tonality - hot stamping is more 'luxurious', UV is more 'modern'.
1000-3000 pieces order: Offset + Traditional Hot Stamping is optimal. Offset unit price drops to 12-18 RMB/box, diluting the MOQ threshold, comprehensive cost is the lowest.
3000+ pieces order: Offset + Traditional Hot Stamping or Offset + UV. Both plans are acceptable, customer chooses by brand tonality. Offset + traditional hot stamping unit price 8-15 RMB/box.
6. 3 core questions for customers to choose a plan
Question 1: What is my order quantity?. Below 500 pieces prioritize digital, 500-2000 pieces both digital and offset are OK, above 2000 pieces prioritize offset. This judgment determines the general direction of the plan.
Question 2: Is my brand tonality 'luxury' or 'modern'?. Hot stamping leans luxury (suitable for cosmetics, high-end food, luxury goods), UV leans modern (suitable for tech products, new consumer brands, esports peripherals). Brand tonality determines the choice of surface process.
Question 3: What is my budget cap?. 500 gift box unit price 20-30 RMB/box is a common range, above 30 RMB/box needs to re-evaluate the budget, below 20 RMB/box needs to be wary of hidden costs. The budget determines the final choice of plan.

FAQ
500 gift boxes: choose offset or digital?
Below 500 pieces prioritize digital printing. Offset requires 1000-3000 pieces MOQ. A 500 piece order at offset unit price would be 35-45 RMB/box, because the fixed cost of offset (machine startup, debugging, test print loss) cannot be spread over 500 pieces, so the unit cost is actually 2x higher. Digital printing 500 pieces MOQ, unit price 22-25 RMB/box, comprehensive cost (printing + surface process + post-press) is 30-50% lower than offset. Unless the customer can accept 2000 piece MOQ and self-digest inventory, offset is not recommended.
Digital hot stamping or traditional hot stamping: which is more cost-effective?
For orders below 500 pieces, digital hot stamping 0.5-1.5 RMB/cm², comprehensive yield 85-92%, unit cost 22-25 RMB/box; traditional hot stamping 0.05-0.2 RMB/cm², comprehensive yield 95-98%, but needs 1000 pieces MOQ to dilute the plate cost (300-800 RMB/plate). For 500 piece order, digital hot stamping has lower comprehensive cost (22.5 RMB vs traditional hot stamping 30-35 RMB). For orders above 1000 pieces, traditional hot stamping has lower comprehensive cost. Below 500 pieces prioritize digital hot stamping, above 1000 pieces prioritize traditional hot stamping.
Does UV coating have odor? Will it affect food packaging?
Traditional UV adhesive contains photoinitiators and reactive diluents, and has slight odor after curing, which volatilizes within 1-2 weeks. It affects odor-sensitive products (chocolate, tea, perfume, cosmetics) and may cause cross-odor. It is recommended that food and cosmetics gift boxes prioritize 'odorless UV adhesive' or 'water-based UV adhesive', priced 1.5-2 times higher, but with basically no odor after curing, and better environmental friendliness. Ordinary electronics gift boxes and festive gift boxes can use ordinary UV adhesive.
Why does offset require 1000-3000 pieces MOQ?
The fixed cost of starting an offset press once (machine setup, test printing, loss) is about 2,000-5,000 RMB. Orders below 1000 pieces, the fixed cost spread per piece is 2-5 RMB/piece, plus the printing cost itself, the unit cost is actually 2-3x more expensive than digital. So offset printers usually require 1000-3000 pieces MOQ to ensure the fixed cost can be diluted to a reasonable level. If the customer insists on 500 piece offset, the printer may 'quote a low price to attract the customer, but actually print 2000 and require the customer to take all', and the customer accepts passively. It is recommended that orders below 500 pieces prioritize digital printing.
Customer chooses offset 2000 pieces MOQ but only needs 500 pieces, what to do?
3 coping plans: first, customer accepts 2000 pieces MOQ, self-digests remaining 1500 pieces (suitable for brand parties with distribution channels); second, customer and printer negotiate 'print at 2000 pieces MOQ unit price, remaining inventory sold by printer on consignment, customer only bears the agreed number of pieces cost' (suitable when brand party has no distribution channel); third, customer switches to digital printing, 500 pieces unit price 22-25 RMB/box, comprehensive cost actually lower than offset 2000 piece MOQ + inventory discount loss. It is recommended that brand parties evaluate order digestion capacity in advance, and not blindly choose offset because of the cheap unit price.
How to calculate hot stamping area? How much does it affect the unit price?
Hot stamping is charged by 'hot stamping area', not by number of gift boxes. Hot stamping area = number of gift boxes × single hot stamping region area. Digital hot stamping 0.5-1.5 RMB/cm², traditional hot stamping 0.05-0.2 RMB/cm², a 10-30x difference. Taking 500 pieces 350×250mm gift box as an example, hot stamping 50cm²/box: digital hot stamping 500 × 50 × 1 = 25,000 RMB = 50 RMB/box; traditional hot stamping 500 × 50 × 0.1 + plate cost 500 RMB = 3,000 RMB = 6 RMB/box. The difference is huge, customers must look at the hot stamping area breakdown when quoting.
