Double-wall corrugated compressive strength is about 50%-80% higher than single-wall, but cost also rises significantly.

Three Structure Types of Corrugated Boxes

Corrugated boxes can be divided into three categories by structure:

Folder corrugated box (Folder): one or several sheets of corrugated board folded into shape, common types include aircraft boxes (with tuck-in bottom and flip-top boxes). Suitable for e-commerce scenarios, transported flat, saving warehouse space.

Rigid setup box (Rigid Setup Box): the box body and bottom are bonded and fixed, the structure is stable and cannot be folded. Common types include fruit crates and home appliance outer boxes. High strength but high transport cost.

Telescope corrugated box (Telescope): top and bottom lids are separated, similar to a base-and-lid box. Commonly seen in fine packaging boxes and large-item transport scenarios.

In actual selection, e-commerce small items prefer folder type to save freight and warehouse space; heavy or fragile items prefer rigid type or double-wall corrugated to ensure transport safety.

Printing Methods of Corrugated Boxes

The printing methods of corrugated boxes differ from those of color boxes, mainly divided into three categories:

Flexography (Flexography): uses flexible rubber or resin plates, inking through an anilox roller. Flexography is suitable for direct printing on corrugated board, with high efficiency and low cost, but precision is inferior to offset. It is the mainstream method for corrugated carton printing.

Offset + lamination (Offset + Lamination): first offset print on coated paper or white card paper, then laminate the color-printed liner onto the corrugated board. This method achieves color-box-level printing effect and is a common solution for high-end corrugated boxes (color box outer cartons, brand logistics boxes).

Digital printing (Digital Printing): HP Indigo and other digital printers can print directly on pre-printed liner (coated kraft paper). The printing resolution requirement of corrugated boxes is usually lower than that of color boxes. Flexography 150-175 lines/inch is sufficient, and the offset lamination solution can achieve conventional offset precision.

Load-bearing and Compression of Corrugated Boxes

The compressive strength (Edge Crush Test, ECT) and load-bearing capacity of corrugated boxes are jointly determined by flute type, number of layers, and paper grammage. Common reference values in the industry:

• E flute single-wall: load about 5-10kg, suitable for clothing, jewelry, small electronic accessories;
• B flute single-wall: load about 10-20kg, suitable for 3C digital products and small furniture parts;
• C flute single-wall: load about 15-25kg, comprehensive corrugated type, commonly used in Europe and America;
• A flute single-wall: load about 20-35kg, suitable for fragile items and alcoholic beverages;

Corrugated paper is mainly made from waste paper pulp and can be recycled multiple times, consistent with the environmental trend of "paper replacing wood" and "paper replacing plastic." Corrugated boxes exported to the EU must comply with the heavy metal restrictions in the 94/62/EC packaging directive.
