Question 1: what is the print volume? Under 500 pieces digital has the edge; 500-2,000 depends on process complexity; over 2,000 pieces digital has basically no advantage.
Question 2: how high is the print-effect requirement? If the acceptance standard is a visibly premium feel, traditional processes are more stable. If 「visible」 is enough, digital is acceptable.
Question 3: will there be reorders? Holiday and seasonal boxes are usually one-off orders. Annual repeat SKUs and brand hero SKUs usually reorder. For reorders digital's color consistency is worse than traditional — leave a ΔE margin.
What a Print Shop Boss Should Actually Say
The print shop boss should tell clients: digital finishing is a complement, not a replacement. For volume runs and high-effect orders traditional processes are more stable; for small-batch, test-sale and personalized runs digital is the right call. Separate the customer base for these two process families, and both capacity utilization and client satisfaction rise.
The most outrageous shop I saw pushed digital foil + UV + embossing on every client regardless of volume or need — quoting the full digital upgrade package no matter what. Within a year returns hit 18%, with complaints concentrated on results not meeting expectations.
