CMYK (print color): subtractive color mixing of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, the color of reflected light, the basic gamut of all printed matter. Offset, digital, and flexo printing are all based on CMYK. The colors CMYK can represent are about 70% of RGB, and bright orange, bright green, and bright blue look muddy in CMYK.
Pantone spot color: pre-mixed specific ink, not blended at print time; one color corresponds to one ink. The Pantone swatch book lists 2000+ colors, each with a unique number and a matching ink formula. The spot color gamut is wider than CMYK, vibrant orange, bright green, gold, and silver can all be reproduced accurately.
I draw these 3 systems as concentric circles: RGB (outer ring) > Pantone (middle ring) > CMYK (inner ring). Colors displayable by an outer ring may not be printable by an inner ring.
3. Measured "Color Difference" Across the 3 Gamuts

Case 4: Fluorescent green. CMYK simply cannot reproduce a fluorescent effect; what comes out looks like "ordinary green". You must use fluorescent inks (Pantone 802C fluorescent green, 803C fluorescent orange) or spot-color screen printing.

Client 2: A high-end beauty brand with an ample budget. The brand's primary colors are "gold-leaf color" + black; the strategy is Pantone 871C gold + black spot color + hot-stamping. Each box face uses 2 spot colors + 1 hot-stamp; color reproduction is 99%, but per-box cost is 30% higher than CMYK.

Oranges, greens, blues, and purples that are out of gamut signal "looks beautiful on screen but cannot be printed".
Tip 2: Use Pantone spot color for the brand primary color; use CMYK for background and decorative colors. This is what 90% of high-end brands do; it balances cost and color. The primary color locks in brand recognition; CMYK decorative colors give designers freedom.

Pitfall 2: Thinking more Pantone spot colors is always better. 3–4 spot colors is the ceiling, because each spot color requires its own plate, its own ink mixing, and its own print run, and registration accuracy drops. For 5+ spot colors, switch to CMYK printing + local processes.
