The unit price of carton-sealing tape varies by more than 10 times, depending on the substrate (transparent BOPP / color-printed / paper-based biodegradable), the width and roll-length combination, and the number of print colors. Paper-based tape poses an adhesion-strength risk during the rainy season and in low-temperature environments. A quotation for the complete packaging order should list tape separately from other auxiliary materials and specify five parameters to avoid distorted price comparisons.

We received an order for a complete Mid-Autumn Festival gift box, including the inner tray, information card, gift bag, and carton-sealing tape. The customer’s first question was: “How much is the carton-sealing tape per roll?”

We quoted a price, and the customer took it to another printing factory for comparison. The other factory quoted 0.4 yuan less. The customer came back and asked: “Have you switched to cheaper tape?”

No. We use the same roll unit price, but what the two companies quoted are fundamentally different products.

Type 1 Price Differential: BOPP vs. Color-Printed Carton Sealing vs. Paper-Based Biodegradable Materials

BOPP transparent tape is the baseline option. Its transparency leaves the contents visible and also facilitates barcode scanning in warehouses. Common thicknesses are 48μm / 50μm / 60μm, and common widths are 45mm / 48mm / 60mm. Its shortcomings are clear: it is made of polypropylene, which is not accepted by recycling systems, so it lowers the recyclability rating of the entire package by one tier. When many brands prepare sustainability packaging reports, they list tape separately as a non-recyclable component.

Color-printed carton-sealing tape is commonly produced by printing the brand-color logo or slogan onto a BOPP substrate. Price differences mainly arise from three factors: ink, plate fees, and plate-making costs. A roll of 48mm×100m color-printed tape typically costs 2 to 5 yuan more than transparent tape. However, there is also a hidden cost—the tape roll diameter determines how often rolls need to be replaced. Small-diameter rolls can cause frequent jams in automatic carton-sealing machines, leading to customer complaints.

Paper-based biodegradable adhesive tape has been the fastest-growing category over the past two years. It uses a kraft paper substrate with a starch adhesive, is accepted in recycling systems, and is compostable. Its unit price is typically 3 to 8 yuan higher than clear BOPP. However, there are two issues that must be clarified in advance:

First, edge lifting during the rainy season. Paper tape relies on moisture to activate its starch adhesive; as humidity rises, its bonding strength actually decreases. From June to July in East China, paper tape performs noticeably worse than BOPP in warehouses without controlled temperatures. We have received customer complaints in June about “the tape falling off as soon as the box is opened.”

Second, poor low-temperature flexibility. BOPP can still conform to the surface at 0℃, while paper-based tape becomes brittle at low temperatures. If the warehouse has no heating during winter in northern regions, this must be confirmed in advance.

Type 2 price differential: Width and roll length determine the actual unit price

This is the section on a quotation sheet that is most likely to be overlooked.

For the same tape, the unit price per meter for 48mm×100m and 60mm×65m may differ by only 10%, but the number of boxes each roll can seal varies considerably. This is because sealing a box requires wrapping around one and a half circumferences; the wider the tape, the fewer wraps are needed to seal the same box.

We calculated the costs for a customer: for a 400×300×150mm box, sealing it once with 48mm tape consumes approximately 1.4m; sealing it once with 60mm tape consumes approximately 1.2m. However, each roll of 60mm×100m tape has a total length of 100m and can seal approximately 71 boxes. A roll of 48mm×100m tape also has a total length of 100m and can nominally seal approximately 71 boxes, but each box consumes an additional 0.2m, reducing the actual effective number of boxes sealed to approximately 63.

After conversion, the per-box tape cost is 1.4/63 = 2.22 fen for the 48mm option and 1.2/71 = 1.69 fen for the 60mm option. Although the unit price of the 60mm option is slightly higher, its total cost is actually 24% lower.

We typically perform this type of calculation once during the quotation stage and show it to the customer; we do not repeat it thereafter.

Third type of price differential: purchase volume and degree of customization

Tape costs are highly sensitive to order volume because they are subject to both plate fees and minimum order quantities.

General-purpose transparent tape has no plate fee, so the unit price can differ by as much as 30% between a single purchase of 10 rolls and 1,000 rolls. Color-printed tape involves plate fees (screen-printing or gravure plates), typically 800 to 2,000 per color, starting with one color and doubling with two colors. For small-volume orders, the plate fee spread across each roll can be extremely high.

There is also a hidden cost: waiting for color changes. Some customers produce four festive gift boxes a year, one color for each festival. If 500 rolls are started for each color, four colors would require 2,000 rolls. If the printing plant can combine orders using the same base material and printing cylinder with only the ink color changed, the cost per roll can be reduced by around 15%.

Therefore, a practical action recommended by the printing factory to customers is to standardize festive tapes on one size specification, place orders throughout the year based on quantities, and change colors without changing the printing plate. This recommendation is not complicated, but many customers have not realized it.

How to List Tape in a Full-Order Packaging Material Quotation

Our approach is to separate tape from the “auxiliary materials” category and quote it as an independent line item, specifying five details: substrate type, width × length, thickness, whether it is printed (including the number of colors), and estimated quantity.

If any one of these five items is omitted, the customer’s comparison will be distorted. “Auxiliary materials” is the most expensive black box in the packaging quotation—a price difference of one yuan may be hidden in the tape or somewhere else.

One more point must be specified: whether tape inspection is a mandatory item in the “packaging integrity acceptance” inspection. Some customers require every roll to be inspected upon delivery for adhesive overflow, foreign objects, and print misalignment. Adhesive overflow will immediately cause an automatic carton sealer to slip, so if this requirement is not clearly stated, the inspection results will be disputed.

    FAQ

Can paper-based compostable tape completely replace BOPP tape?

Not without conditions. Paper-based tape loses bond strength during the high-humidity rainy season and performs poorly at low temperatures. Warehouse conditions should be confirmed first for southern China in June-July and for northern China during winter.

Why does 60mm tape have a higher unit price but a lower total cost?

Wider tape consumes less material to seal the same box, allowing a roll with the same total length to seal more boxes. For a 400×300×150mm box, the 60mm option reduces tape cost per box by approximately 24% compared with the 48mm option.

How much does a printing plate for printed sealing tape usually cost?

Screen printing or gravure commonly costs 800-2000 yuan per color. Pricing starts at 1 color, while 2 colors cost twice as much. For small orders, the plate fee allocated to each roll is very high and represents a major hidden cost.

Why can small-diameter tape jam in an automatic case sealer?

A small roll diameter requires more frequent changes, and poor compatibility between the roll core and spindle can cause slipping. Quotations should specify the roll diameter or total length rather than only the price per roll.

Should tape be listed on the quotation?

Yes. It should appear on a separate line specifying 5 details: base material, width×length, thickness, whether it is printed and the number of colors, and estimated quantity. Combining it under “accessories” can distort price comparisons.

Is it cost-effective to order 500 rolls in each of 4 colors for 4 seasonal projects?

Generally, no. Standardizing the dimensions and plate cylinder, placing orders throughout the year based on demand, and changing colors without changing plates can reduce the cost per roll by approximately 15%.

Should adhesive overflow be inspected when receiving a tape delivery?

Yes. Adhesive overflow can cause automatic case sealers to slip and should be treated as a mandatory packaging integrity inspection item. The inspection method should be stated in the contract or quotation.
