Compliance Requirement Four: Shipping Marks, Transport Symbols, and Documentation

The format of shipping marks on export packaging is often specified by the customer. It typically includes the consignee code, destination, reference number, carton number, and other details. Shipping marks must be printed clearly and durably; screen printing or pre-printing is recommended to prevent abrasion from ordinary inkjet printing during transit.

Storage and transport symbols such as "Fragile," "This Way Up," and "Keep Dry" must also be affixed to the outside of the container, in accordance with ISO 780. The colors and graphics of these symbols are subject to mandatory specifications and cannot be designed arbitrarily.

For customs declaration documentation, wooden packaging must declare the IPPC mark code, food packaging must declare a food contact statement, and some countries also require a certificate of origin and a phytosanitary certificate.
