What Are the Common Folding Carton Structures? A Guide to Different Box Types

Why Folding Carton Structure Matters More Than Printing

Many customers focus on color and pattern when customizing folding cartons. In fact, what determines the grade of a folding carton is usually the structure itself. A suitable box type both protects the product and lets consumers feel brand value the moment they open the box. Once the box type is chosen wrongly, even the best printing process cannot rescue it.

Folding cartons fall into two broad categories by forming method: Folding Carton and Rigid Box. Folding cartons are formed by die-cutting and creasing a single sheet of paperboard, with low cost and easy transport. Rigid boxes use greyboard or density board for the body, then laminate face paper, with high strength and a premium feel, but larger footprint and higher price. The common box types are explained one by one below.

1. Lift-off Lid Box

The lift-off lid box is the most classic folding carton structure, composed of an upper lid and a lower base, hence the name "heaven and earth". The lid is usually 1-2mm smaller than the base for easy closing. The inner height of the base generally reserves 10-15mm of buffer space above the product height.

For materials, greyboard is the first choice, with common thicknesses of 1.5mm, 2.0mm and 3.0mm; face paper can be art paper, specialty paper or gold/silver cardstock. Inner linings often use EVA, velvet, paper card or sponge. Surface processes can combine lamination, hot stamping, spot UV and embossing.

Typical applications: high-end cosmetic boxes, moon cake gift boxes, jewelry boxes, wine boxes. The structural strength is high and the sense of ceremony is strong, but transport footprint is large and direct e-commerce express shipping is not suitable; an outer carton is usually required.

2. Drawer Box

A drawer box consists of an outer sleeve and an inner tray. The inner tray slides horizontally into the sleeve from one side, like a drawer. The key dimension is that the inner box is 0.5-1mm smaller per side than the inner size of the sleeve, otherwise the push-pull will stick.

Materials often use white cardstock (300-400g) or greyboard with laminated face paper. The surface can be laminated, hot-stamped or embossed. The drawer box offers a unique opening experience, often used for electronics boxes, luxury packaging and cultural creative products.

Drawer boxes require high precision in the outer sleeve; paper thickness error beyond ±0.1mm may affect the push-pull feel. A physical sample is recommended before mass production.

3. Book-Type Box

The book-type box connects the cover and one side of the body with paperboard or fabric-textured material, opening like a book. It is often used for high-end gifts, jewelry, brand gift boxes and souvenirs. The body uses greyboard or density board, 2.0-3.0mm thick; inner linings often use velvet, flocking or EVA.

The book-type box can open to 180 degrees, with strong display effect and easy side-standing on shelves. Its cost is among the highest of all box types, and the production cycle usually takes 7-10 days.

4. Flip-Top Box

The flip-top box has the lid connected to the body by a hinge, opening for use. The hinge can be split (lid fixed to body with hook-and-loop or magnets) or integrated (formed in one piece with paperboard). Integrated hinges demand high paper thickness and creasing precision, usually with thickness ≥1.5mm.

Flip-top boxes are convenient to open and close, and the lid will not be lost, making them suitable for gift boxes, cosmetic boxes and food gift boxes. Surface processes are similar to lift-off lid boxes, and hot stamping, UV and embossing can all be stacked.

5. Window Box

A window box has an opening on the front or top of the body, covered with transparent PVC or PET film, so consumers can see the product directly. Window position and size must be set at the design stage and completed during die-cutting. The window edge usually keeps 2-3mm of paper to ensure structural strength.

Window boxes are widely used for food packaging (pastries, candy), toy packaging and stationery packaging. The structural cost is slightly higher than a standard folding carton, but the display effect is significant, making it a common solution for "see-the-goods" purchases.

6. Mailer Box

The mailer box is formed by die-cutting and creasing a single sheet of paperboard, requiring no gluing or only a little glue. The common structure is a tuck-in lock bottom, with fast opening speed, and it is the mainstream box type for e-commerce express shipping.

Materials are mainly E-flute and B-flute corrugated, with some using white cardstock and kraft cardstock. In cross-border e-commerce scenarios, mailer boxes with digital printing enable small-batch personalization, with minimum order quantities of 10 pieces now a reality.

7. Tube Box and Other Special-Shaped Boxes

The tube box consists of a body and upper and lower lids, with a distinctive shape and high recognition. It is commonly seen in tea caddies, perfume boxes, wine boxes and high-end gifts. Hexagonal and octagonal tube boxes are also available, with more complex production processes.

Other special-shaped boxes include triangles, hearts and irregular shapes, mostly used for IP derivatives and limited edition packaging. Special-shaped boxes are high-cost and printing registration is difficult, but the visual impact is strong, making them suitable as brand focal points.

Light products (≤200g) + low-to-medium budget → mailer box, window box; light products + medium-to-high budget → drawer box, flip-top box; medium-to-heavy products (200g-1kg) → lift-off lid box, book-type box; high-end gifts/brand gift boxes → book-type box, lift-off lid box + hot stamping and embossing combination.
