RTO: oxidizes the exhaust at 760-820 °C, removing 95-99%, with stack concentration <20 mg/m³, far below the standard. Online monitoring: a VOC continuous emission monitoring system (CEMS) at the stack uploads data to the environmental platform in real time. Suited to large printing enterprises and key VOC-emitting facilities.
V. 3 Questions Owners Ask Most Often
Q1: "I use water-based ink. Do I still need treatment?" Answer: Yes. Water-based inks generate 60-80% less VOC than solvent-based, but it is not zero. Water-based inks contain 5-20% alcohol solvents, and you still have to meet the limits. The upside is treatment cost is 50%+ lower than for solvent-based systems, so it is the preferred retrofit direction.
Q2: "How often must I change the activated carbon?" Answer: It depends on concentration. Usually every 1-3 months, or every 1-2 weeks in a high-concentration workshop. Once adsorption efficiency drops to 50%, you must replace it. Spent activated carbon is hazardous waste (HW49) and must be disposed of by a qualified contractor.
Q3: "RTO is so expensive. Is it worth it?" Answer: It depends on scale. For key enterprises using more than 10 tons/year of solvent-based ink or emitting more than 1 ton/year of VOC, RTO is a must-have, not an option. Small plants can use activated-carbon + catalytic oxidation — that is enough.
VI. 3 Implementation Details That Actually Matter
Detail 1: Every workshop must have an emergency-exhaust button. Screen-printing and offset-press areas are high-VOC zones, and VOC can spike suddenly during equipment faults. The emergency-exhaust button ramps the fan to full power within 10 seconds, protecting employees. Cost is USD 1.4k-2.8k; not installing one is a major safety hazard.
Detail 2: Employees must have an annual occupational-health check. Screen-printing and offset-press staff should have blood count, liver function, and neurological function tested once a year. Anyone with abnormal results should be reassigned promptly — no toughing it out. The employer pays for the check-up; it must not be pushed onto the employee.
Detail 3: Personal protective equipment (PPE) is not "for show." A respirator is not something you hand out and forget. Use the 3M 6001/6003 series with organic-vapor cartridges, and change cartridges every 1-2 weeks. Activated-carbon masks do not work against VOC; a proper respirator is mandatory. This is the company's responsibility — do not cut corners.
VII. Closing: VOC Treatment Is the Company's "Occupational-Health Insurance"
I have spent 11 years in packaging, and I have seen too many printing-plant owners treat VOC treatment as a checkbox for inspectors, forgetting that it is first and foremost about employee health.
