Three Core Dimensions for Determining Packaging Quality

Judging whether packaging meets the requirements cannot rely solely on whether it "looks good." A complete packaging quality assessment should simultaneously cover three dimensions: appearance compliance, physical performance, and regulatory compliance. A problem in any one dimension can lead to losses: appearance issues affect sales conversion, performance issues result in transport damage, and compliance issues may lead to recalls or penalties.

The commonly used industry references are the GB/T 4857 series (transport packaging testing), GB 4806 series (food contact materials), GB 23350-2021 (restricting excessive commodity packaging), as well as ISTA, RoHS, REACH, and others for export markets. Dimension 1: Appearance Compliance

Appearance inspection is divided into two parts: printing quality and structural precision.

Printing quality mainly focuses on registration deviation, color reproduction, barcode readability, and ink layer adhesion. Generally, items are compared one by one against the approved proof (OK sample). Registration deviation per the GB/T 17934 series requirements is typically ≤0.2 mm; color is measured with a spectrophotometer as ΔE, generally controlled within 3; barcodes are inspected per GB/T 14204 to reach grades A/B/C/D; ink layer adhesion is tested by applying 3M tape, pressing it down, and peeling it off to check for ink removal.

Structural precision mainly focuses on die-cut dimensions, box forming, and bond strength. Die-cut dimensional tolerance is typically ±1.0 mm, and the peel strength of bonded areas refers to GB/T 14574. These are the most intuitive items during customer acceptance.

Dimension Two: Physical Performance Compliance

Physical performance is the hard benchmark of a package's protective capability. It is divided into three major categories according to transportation scenarios:

  • Compression and stacking: Tests stacking limits, corresponding to GB/T 4857.4.
  • Drop and impact: Tests handling and loading impact, corresponding to GB/T 4857.5.
  • Moisture content and temperature/humidity: Excessively high moisture content in corrugated cartons will significantly reduce strength; it is generally controlled at 8–12%.

If long-distance transportation or export is involved, vibration, spray (water resistance), and hexagonal drum tests (ISTA 3A, 3E, etc.) also need to be added. It is recommended that these items be retested once before the first shipment of a new product and when the shipping method changes, so that problems can be intercepted before mass production.

Dimension Three: Legal Compliance

Compliance is an aspect easily overlooked by many companies; common checkpoints include:

  • Food contact materials: whether the inner liner, coating, and adhesive comply with GB 4806.7 (plastics) or GB 4806.8 (paperboard).
  • Export restrictions: the EU RoHS and REACH regulations set limits on heavy metals and phthalate chemicals.
  • Excessive packaging: GB 23350-2021 sets upper limits on packaging layers, cost, and void ratio for food and cosmetics.
  • Wood packaging: pallets and wooden cases exported to Europe, the US, and Australia must comply with ISPM 15 fumigation or heat treatment requirements.

These items often do not appear in customers' routine inspection checklists, but once flagged by customs or market regulation sampling inspections, the cost far exceeds that of a one-time testing expense.

Implementation Recommendations

In practice, it is recommended that enterprises break down inspection into three levels: Incoming Quality Control (IQC) to verify appearance and basic dimensions; Outgoing Quality Control (OQC) to verify packaging integrity and labeling; and Type Testing (third-party) conducted periodically to cover physical performance and compliance. For small- to medium-batch projects, third-party testing can be entrusted to the packaging manufacturer.
