Carton (Folding Carton) Inspection Items

Carton and corrugated box inspection items overlap, but cartons place greater emphasis on appearance and fine details. Required inspection items: appearance (no scratches, color variation, or smudging), die-cutting accuracy (dimensional tolerance ±0.5 mm), creasing quality (no cracking or burrs), color reproduction (ΔE ≤ 3 against the standard sample), and fold endurance (≥ 20 repeated folds at 180°).

Color reproduction is a key focus for cartons. CIE Lab color difference ΔE is an industry-standard metric: ΔE ≤ 1 is virtually imperceptible to the naked eye, ΔE ≤ 3 is the industry acceptance threshold, and ΔE > 5 indicates a noticeable color difference. Finishing processes (hot stamping, UV, embossing, and lamination) are inspected separately. Hot stamping is evaluated for adhesion and abrasion resistance (cross-cut test grade 4B or higher); UV coating for gloss and abrasion resistance (no peeling after 50 eraser rubs); embossing for raised height and definition; and lamination for adhesion and blistering.

Plastic Packaging Testing Items

Testing of plastic packaging (blister boxes, plastic bottles, plastic bags) is divided into two categories: physical and chemical. Physical testing: tensile strength (unit MPa), tear strength, seal strength (heat-seal peel force), light transmittance, barrier properties (water vapor transmission rate, oxygen transmission rate). Chemical testing: overall migration, specific migration, plasticizer content, heavy metal content.

Chemical testing is mandatory for food-contact plastics. GB 4806.7-2023 specifies the overall migration limit (10mg/dm²) and specific migration limits (depending on the specific substance) for plastics in food contact. Composite Material Testing Items

Composite materials (paper + plastic + aluminum foil, paper + plastic film, etc.) require testing covering both paper and plastic categories. In addition, interlaminar bond strength (unit: N/15mm)—the adhesive force between each layer of material—must be tested. Insufficient bond strength can cause delamination during transport, resulting in loss of barrier properties.

Composite materials used for food packaging must also undergo comprehensive testing in accordance with three sets of standards: GB 4806.7 (plastic layer) + GB 4806.8 (paper layer) + GB 9685 (additives), with no layer to be omitted.

Common Causes of Non-Conformance and Improvement Directions

Non-conformance 1: Insufficient compressive strength of corrugated boxes. Common causes are insufficient basis weight of the linerboard or excessively high moisture content. Improvement: Increase the linerboard from 200 g to 250 g, and control humidity in the storage environment.

Non-conformance 2: Color deviation of paper boxes. Common causes are batch-to-batch ink variations or uneven printing pressure. Improvement: Require suppliers to provide ink samples for each batch, and only accept a color difference of ΔE ≤ 3.

Non-conformance 4: Delamination of composite bags. Common causes are uneven adhesive coating or insufficient curing temperature. Improvement: Require suppliers to provide bond strength test reports, and conduct sampling inspection for each batch.

Testing Cycle and Cost Reference

Routine physical testing (compression strength, edge crush strength, bursting strength, moisture content) takes 3-5 days, with a single-item cost of 200-500 yuan. Chemical testing (migration levels, specific substances) takes 7-15 days, with a single-item cost of 1000-3000 yuan. ISTA transport testing takes 10-15 days, with a full set costing 5000-15000 yuan.
